Question by heavenlydori88: 1995 Volkswagen Golf Manual Car turns off?
My bf's 1995 VW Golf turns off during random times, it usually happens when he slows down. We also have the problem that now when he turns the car we can hear rattling like if metal is banging against metal. Can someone please give me an idea of what might be wrong with the car that it turns off by itself that way? Could it be a vaccum leak? And what about the rattling? Also we're in search of a Tornado Red passenger side fender if anyone has one up for sale.

You should really take the car to a competent mechanic. The car turning off at random poses great danger to you and
others.

As for the fender try calling this place. L@T Enterprises at 610-264-9191. Its a VW and Audi salvage yard. The rattle might be an alxe starting to go bad. If it only does it while turning one direction thats a good sign it is. As for the ramdom stalling does it start right back up? It might need a good tune up and the throttle body cleaned. There is a valve in there that controls the idle speed and also keeps the car from stalling.
VWs have had bad electrical switches on the ignition switch. If you have a lot of weight hanging on the key ring it will surely cause this problem. Wiggle the key in the ignition while the car is running and see if it cuts out.
A vacuum leak will give you a lower idle and the car may die at a stop. From your explaination it sounds more like the car just turns off, not that the idle is so low it stalls.
