New To Golf? Here Is What You Need To Know
Golf is a great sport. It is a game of skill, and playing it is both an enjoyable physical and mental challenge. There are a number of rules in Golf. They are complicated though and it's out of the scope of any one article to explain all of them clearly. Suffice it to say that the underlying principle of these rules is fairness, as is stated on the back cover of the official rule book: "play the course as you find it, play the ball as it lies, and if you can't do either, do what is fair."
You have to make sure that you have proper equipment with you. There are rules you have to follow as far as equipments go. Golf's rule book places a limit of fourteen clubs in each bag. Actually, to be honest, you may bring as many clubs as you want. What is frowned upon is when you borrow these clubs from other players.
There are generally four types of clubs that golfers use and these are wood, iron, wedges, and putters. All of them serve a specific function. Wood, for instance, is the longest club in a golfer's bag and it has a rounded mass behind the face of the club, making it ideal for shots which require power and distance. Irons on the other hand are shorter and have a flat angled face making them useful for shots approaching the green or from more difficult lies. If you're near the hole, and want to roll the ball along the ground, putters are the best. Wedges have the greatest loft angles among the four, and as such produce the most spin on the ball, making it "bite" the green upon impact.
Prior to 1935, golf clubs with wooden shafts were the norm. They were replaced by steel clubs because apart from being frail, they proved difficult for golfers to master being that you'd have to use a different swing for each club. Steel, though heavier, was much stronger and more consistent in its performance. Very recently, around the 90s, graphite shafts became commonplace. As is apparent, clubs have evolved over the years. They have become better and lighter. Still, shafts made of steel maintain a strong presence in golf, as they provide more accuracy due to their lower torque and flex. These days, golfers invest on golf club custom fitting to better their game. These are better in many ways since they are personalized to your needs.
